Tagum fetes farmers in Ugmad Festival

Davao del Norte, September 2 (PIA) - - Farming is more fun/fund in Tagum City.

For the second year, the Tagum City Government lauded the farmers including the fisherfolks and livestock caretakers in the Ugmad Festival, which opened earlier today at the Rotary Park of the city.

Remelyn Recoter, regional director of Department of Agriculture (DA) XI, saluted the farmers for their contribution in the development of the city and the province.

“Kung ang teachers mag strike, walang klase. Okay lang. Kung mga drivers mag strike, walang masasakyan. Okay lang. Eh kung ang farmers magstrike, mahirap ata yon; wala tayong makain,”  (If the teachers’ go to strike, no class, its ok, if the drivers strike, no transportation, its ok ut if the farmers strike, its hard we have nothing to eat.) Recoter added.

Vice Gov. Victorio Suaybaguio labelled the farmers as parents of the country because he added, “like parents, farmers are the ones feeding us.”

“The farmers are sustaining us with their harvest. This is equivalent to a noble act of parenting,” Suaybaguio declared.

Mayor Allan Rellon also named the farmers as living heroes of the community being the backbone of the society.

Rellon cited that Tagum City was also known because of the produce of the farmers that were being sold in the night market, which was recently recognized with Galing Pook Award.

“The celebration today is for the farmers and we have lined up activities that are intended to make them happy,” Rellon said.

Among the features of the month-long festival are Palarong Pansakahan (Agrilympics), Farmer’s Day with Free Manicure, Pedicure and Medical Check-up, Culinary contest, Best Lechon contest and Technology trainings.

Highlighting the opening program, 20 carrousels and water buffalos as participants of the Carroza Y Pintados de Carabao paraded the streets of the city from the Freedom Park.

Carroza Y Pintados de Carabao was a competition of best dressed carrousels by the barangays and painted buffalos by local artists. Emerged winners of the contest were Barangay Nueva Fuerza for the

Carroza and Elvis Goloran for the Pintados de Carabao receiving P-10,000 and P-5,000 respectively.

DA XI Regional Director Recoter also turned over during the opening program a tractor worth P 2.4 million and rice seeds as commitment of DA Secretary Proceso to the city.

In addition, Recoter gave 11 sheeps and five water buffalo to six farmers of the city. (PIA 11, Michael Uy)
