Davao City starts pilot underground cable project

DAVAO CITY- A joint working group from the local government and a utility firm will start inspecting the site for a pilot underground cabling project.
Atty. Joseph Felizarta acting assistant city building official said the proposed area for the pilot underground cables will be within the Davao City Hall and Sangguniang Panglungsod peripheries.

The current set-up is horizontal cabling where electric and telecommunication cables are propped up by posts.
Felizarta said Davao Light and Power Company is allocating P70-million for the project. He expects other companies with cables on the poles to allocate fund for the undergound cabling.

He said that having underground cables will rid the area of dangling wires which is an eyesore.

It will really help in tourism, our surroundings will be cleaner and orderly. Felizarta said.

He also said that wires encased underground tend to be protected from the elements. As compare when they are exposed in the posts.

Felizarta said these cables are safe and well-protected from calamities such as floods.

He added that Davao Light through its sister company has already undertaken the same project in Cebu City.

The project is expected to start after the Araw ng Dabaw celebrations this March 16. (PIA/RG Alama)
